Following the announcement by the South Africa Minister of Tourism, Ms Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane last week, it is with deep sadness that we have to inform you of the cancellation of this year’s Africa’s Travel Indaba in Durban scheduled for 12-14 May 2020.

After the postponement was announced in March 2020, South African Tourism and Africa’s Travel Indaba team worked tirelessly to find solutions to stage the biggest showcase for our African travel and tourism industry, but as the world was shutting down and borders closed it was imminent that the 2020 edition of Africa’s Travel could not happen.

The announcement comes at the time when South Africa is currently under level four lockdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The battle to contain the pandemic globally has resulted in a significant impact on tourism activities and public gatherings.

We know that this will come as an additional setback to the industry given that Africa’s Travel Indaba is diarised by many as a platform to showcase and sell Africa’s tourism offering to the world during the month of May. Furthermore, this trade show has been viewed by both the exhibitor and buyer as a business tool to drive conversations and transactions between each other.

This is not a decision we have taken lightly and there are a couple of matters that were taken into consideration these include:
• The absolute need to do our part in ensuring the battle against the Covid-19 virus is won and to further safeguard human lives,
• Severity that the pandemic has imposed into the global tourism sector,
• Number of countries currently under lockdown,
• South African borders being closed with no travelling anticipated taking place anytime soon.

It goes without saying that these are uncertain times and more than ever we ought to remain strong in our plea to emerge victorious post-COVID-19. South African Tourism would like to assure you of our commitment to the tourism industry family at large that we will continue working and planning vigorously for an enhanced Africa’s Travel Indaba 2021. This will enable the tourism globe a platform to rebuild and reconnect. Until then “please stay at home so we can travel later” and reconstruct tourism together again.

We thank you for your understanding on this matter. To our esteemed buyers and members of the tourism and travel industry, we will overcome, and we look forward to showcasing again to the world what Africa has on offer. We will welcome again travellers to our continent to experience this beautiful place, we call home.

Stay safe during these unprecedented times and we look forward to welcoming you to South Africa soon.
