The sub-tropical climate, golden beaches and coastal forests have seen the KZN South Coast become an established family holiday destination, however, the accommodation and conference venues offering international-level quality and service is now seeing the region emerging as a key MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events) destination as well.
“The KZN South Coast has all the necessary requirements for intimate to medium-sized conferences as well as large-scale high-profile events,” explained CEO of Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT), Phelisa Mangcu. “Just recently, four of our venues were named as finalists and award winners at the 2019 Lilizela Tourism Awards in KZN, further showcasing the quality offerings available in the region.”
The Ugu South Coast Tourism (USCT) – tasked with expanding the region’s tourism offerings – provides extensive business and development support to the establishments and attractions in the South Coast. This ensures that delegates and event-goers benefit from a high level of service and top-quality product offerings aligned with international expectations.
There are a variety of venue types along the coast and inland, with the capacity to accommodate up to 300 delegates in cinema-style seating or up to 400 for a banquet setting. Outside of the venues, the KZN South Coast also offers business visitors a really diverse and engaging offering for team building and recreational activities.
Fondly known as ‘The Golf Coast’, the area boasts an impressive 11 golf courses, ranging in difficulty but synonymous in quality. There are also Marine Protected Areas – Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks – with globally-renowned diving and snorkelling opportunities, Blue Flag Beaches, and extreme outdoor adventures. These include the Oribi Gorge Swing, abseiling and white water rafting offered by the award-winning, Wild 5 Adventures.
Through Ugu South Coast Tourism’s Great Drives Out routes, visiting delegates are also able to participate in culturally-enlightening excursions into the hinterland regions. The KwaNzimakwe Multi-Trails boasts 4×4, mountain biking and hiking trails; while the KwaXolo Caves contains centuries-old San paintings depicting early life in the region.
Alongside conferencing, the KZN South Coast is now one of the top destinations for high-profile events. Annually, the region hosts 5 flagship events, including:
- The Bike Fest
- The Uvukile Gospel Festival
- The Ugu Jazz Festival
- The Ugu Film Festival
- The South Coast Fever MTB & Trail Run Series
In addition to the flagship events, the region is also the final destination for the world’s largest stage mountain bike race, KAP Sani2C; as well as the 9-day, 4-province mountain bike adventure, joberg2c which ends at Umdoni Park Golf Club.
