Radical Rooftops for Year End Parties

Event Africa Contributor October 17, 2019 Industry News

There’s nothing like the Picture-perfect setting in which to end your work year. Enter the rooftop venue.

Nothing says ‘thank you’ better than an unbelievable view, delicious food, and a special function created just for you. And nope, we’re not talking about birthdays, but year-end parties. “Rooftops provide a refreshing setting… They also provide an opportunity for guests to mingle freely, in a relaxed and charming atmosphere,” says Kat Bucalina, Shared Management and Leasing at Aria Property Group, the company behind Pier Place.

These days, breakfasts on the roof are a huge trend, says Renaldo Pretorius, Marketing Manager for Africa at Radisson Hotel Group. “People prefer to have their event on our rooftop, so break-y with a difference and add a DJ to that – music to your ears and ours.”

According to Cartel House’s Nina van Deventer, clients are looking for earthy tones and sustainability in the kinds of venues they choose. “People tend to want to keep the wooden tables and not cover it up. This also works well with the use of succulents as decor (people are also more water conscious in Cape Town these days).” But, she adds, “At the end of the day most of the end-of-year events just want to have a good time.” We couldn’t agree more.

 113 Loop

A new and contemporary rooftop featuring 360o panoramic views of Cape Town’s skyline, 113 Loop is a gorgeous space for a year-end party. It is situated across two levels with a rooftop pool deck perfect for sundowners or pre-drinks on top of the actual venue floor.

The venue features two large balconies overlooking the Cape Town CBD on one side, and the colourful Signal Hill on the other side, making it perfect for those days the south-easterly wind decides to play up.

According to Charl Cronje of Cartel Rooftop Bar, which runs 113 Loop, the building is also home to six brand new luxury accommodation rooms – making the venue ideal for an inner-city wedding or exclusive corporate getaway. “The location is slap bang in the middle of town with ample off-street parking after hours,” he adds, saying that although 113 Loop is not open to the public, it is available for weddings, private and corporate events and film shoots.

180 Lounger

A versatile space with breath-taking views of Cape Town, 180 Lounger offers both an indoor and outdoor terrace space for parties. Corporates can choose between 180 Rooftop Venue to host events, 180 Rooftop Connect for conferences and meetings, or 180 Rooftop Travel, a travel lounge.

The venue recently hosted an event during a Cape winter storm. “We provided a cocoon for the party to continue while the storm and gale force winds added a unique ambiance like no other.  It was not your typical day at 180 Lounger,” says Christian Halm, who manages the space.

The venue has a slick, modern interior design, and a fully serviced bar with variety of options for events. Their capacity is 150 pax indoor and outdoor. “The main challenge is to deliver a memorable experience for every single guest. Our solution is to adjust staff according to the number of guests. The recipe of an exquisite service at 180 Lounger is the mix of making it happen without being seen or heard,” Christian explains.

180 Lounger is about simplicity, sophistication and elegance, he adds. “We are looking forward to host your ultimate rooftop experience.”

Cartel House

A rooftop ideal for special events and film shoots, Cartel House offers a gorgeous venue with both inside and outside areas well protected from Cape Town’s dastardly south-easterly winds. The rooftop hosts up to 100 pax seated and 220 for cocktail-style events. It also comes complete with a 100-seater auditorium for conferences and networking functions.

“We are the ideal one-stop-shop,” says Nina van Deventer, “an all-inclusive venue offering beautiful views, a central location and easy access from anywhere in the CBD. We also come furnished; we have a spacious kitchen area, and offer free parking after 17:00 on weekdays and all day on weekends.” She adds that because they have been working with the same trusted suppliers for over 15 years they are like a well-oiled machine and can accommodate any event without breaking a sweat.

Cartel House is designed with opulence in mind, and offers the discerning event planner a fresh venue that combines old world style with a modern flair. The space still manages to be incredibly versatile, with The Aleit Group and Anne Mann Celebrates recently transforming it into an unrecognisable spectacle. “They’ve hosted pre-wedding parties with belly dancers, end-of-year functions, weddings and launch events – and the venue would look different each and every time.”

As a bonus tip, Nina suggests planners secure their end-of-year function date sooner rather than later. “People tend to leave it to the last minute and then they are stuck with having a party on a Monday or Tuesday,” she says.

Haralds Bar and Terrace

A hidden gem in the heart of Cape Town Foreshore,  Haralds Bar and Terrace is a stunning rooftop space run by Park Inn by Radisson Cape Town Foreshore. Haralds Bar floats 11 stories up in the sky, with an easy-breezy vacation-style vibe that makes it the ultimate setting for a laidback, festive experience.

This sought-after venue can hold up to 140 people cocktail style, or 100 pax seated formally. The bar also offers a variety of menus that can be customised to suit corporates’ needs. The Park Inn also has two large conference venues opening up onto the terrace, which can be included in their value offering.

Haralds Bar is versatile and can easily service guests through all of Cape Town’s unpredictable weather. It has an open air rooftop as well as an enclosed area for chilly days. One of the most bizarre events they had to host to date was a Western-themed hoedown for about 180 people, complete with an indoor saloon area, a blow-up tent, mechanical bull and hay bales.

Pier Place

A premium event venue and rooftop in Cape Town’s CBD, Pier Place offers guests a modernised interior design, a fully equipped chef’s kitchen, customised furniture and an expansive rooftop with an outdoor container bar and surround sound.

Pier Place can host events for up to 250 pax, and leaves no stone unturned when it comes to the design details. “We pride ourselves on our expansive rooftop with customised lounge areas and the added bonus of an outside container bar,” says Kat Bucalina, Shared Management and Leasing at Aria Property Group, the company behind Pier Place. “We work with incredible suppliers who are always on the ball and endeavour to make every event as seamless as possible, no matter how large a group! There is also always an event manager to ensure that everything goes to plan.”

Pier Place sees a lot of requests for personalised or bespoke cocktails, branding or gifts. Some of their most memorable moments were working with companies like Pernod Ricard, Nikon and Women’s Health magazine to bring their vision to light.

To sweeten the deal, Kat has a great offer to ensure you book your next event at Pier Place: “Clients who book their year-end-function with us by 31 October 2019, will receive a complimentary and specially customised cocktail or welcome drink for all guests upon arrival.

T&Cs apply, of course, and this offer is subject to availability.

The Ghibli Bar and Pool Terrace

Radisson Blu Hotel & Residence, Cape Town, has a cosmopolital space in store for you. The Ghibli Bar and Pool Terrace is a vibrant space from which to sip on cocktails and while away the afternoon (or evening) in sublime comfort.

Ghibli can host up to 200 people around its spacious and well-stocked bar, and also offers a 180o view from way atop the 23rd floor for up to 40 guests to relax and take in the view. “Only a stone’s throw from trendy Bree Street makes it the ideal location for pre- or post-dinner cocktails. The venue offers stellar panoramic city views, a lively atmosphere and a selection of craft cocktails. It is versatile, and we can dress it to any requested themes,” says Renaldo Pretorius, Marketing Manager for Africa at Radisson Hotel Group.

Although weather can be an obstacle, Ghibli overcomes this challenge with a stretch tent marquee that can easily be organised upon request along with portable heaters for warmth on chilly evenings.

“Our most memorable event so far was our Super Heroes New Year’s Party. Partygoers pulled out all the stops with their favourite superhero costumes. They danced the night away to the talented DJs on the pool deck while feasting on delicious canapes and bubbles.” So definitely worth a visit, then.

Randlords

One of the most sought-after venues in Johannesburg, Randlords is perfectly perched at the highest point in Braamfontein. Its exclusive rooftop bar and lounge is located on the 22nd and 23rd floors of South Point Towers, and offers magical 360o views of the glittering City of Gold.

The space can facilitate a plated dinner for up to 200, or a cocktail event for 450 pax, with ample off-street parking on two basement levels. Randlords also provides planners with menus tailored to their event needs. The menu selectors are complemented by a bespoke wine and beverage list chosen by sommeliers to tantalise even the most jaded of palates.

Perhaps the most striking feature of all is its floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall glass, ensuring that every person in the venue has a taste of the magnificent city views. Not to be missed.

The RED Roof

Radisson really excels in creating beautiful rooftop spaces. The Radisson RED Hotel in the heart of Cape Town’s waterfront area is one such venue. Voted as the number one rooftop spot in the city, The RED Roof is a gorgeous, modern space. It comes complete with a rooftop bar and killer views of the city, particularly at sundown.

“In summer, lounge poolside (yes, there’s a cool rooftop pool), cocktail in hand, as you soak up the vistas of Table Mountain, the harbour, and the skyline. And after a dip, head to the red-hot food truck, and make your selections,” says Renaldo Pretorius, Marketing Manager for Africa at Radisson Hotel Group.

The RED Roof goes the extra mile to guarantee customer satisfaction. One of their most memorable events was DJ Euphonik’s summer residency, which brought the Jozi crowd to their rooftop. This year he’ll be back again in December. They have also hosted an Indian Sangeet, which is a ceremony bringing two families together to celebrate several days before the wedding.

Its location in the trendy Silo District is a major drawcard, and the rooftop can hold up to 120 excluding staff. “We can customise your experience by adding entertainment, and we have sufficient seating for your end of year parties,” he says. “We feed off the energy of what makes Cape Town special. Our team is professional and dedicated to make sure that your event runs smoothly. You’ll even find the GM mingling with guests.” The menu can be chosen beforehand, and The RED Roof also offers a great Gin Blending service. “Do try it out, it’s a great year-end gift,” Renaldo adds.

This year, Radisson RED Hotel has a wonderful end-of-year special called Drop It Like It’s Hot. Their options are R380 pp for two proteins, and R450pp for three proteins with the Cry of the Braai menu at the hotel’s Oui Bar or RED Roof.
